Herston Quarter – Surgical, Treatment and Rehabilitation Services (STAR)

Heard Group Expansion Joint Systems were fortunate enough to be chosen by builder Besix Watpac to supply and install our expansion joint products in the construction of a truly world class health facility, the Herston Quarter – Surgical, Treatment and Rehabilitation Services (STAR).

Designed by Hassal Architects, this first stage of a $1.1 billion master planned Herston Health Precinct includes new surgical treatment and rehabilitation services, Spanish steps and a Skybridge linking STAR to the Royal Brisbane and Royal Women’s Hospitals.

Heard Group are proud to have supplied our Medium Duty Continuous Angle Leg Floor Expansion Joints with P5 grip rated stainless steel cover plates throughout the hospital and our CPSX Carpark Expansion Joint throughout the hospital’s multi-storey car park.

The Heard Group Medium Duty Continuous Angle Leg Floor Expansion Joint has been specifically designed for installation into floors where there is a requirement to lift up an expansion joint in order to allow a topping slab to be installed over a structural concrete slab. This expansion joint is ideal for applications where the expansion joint can be fitted to a set recognised level (RL). The new topping slab and required floor finish can then be installed after the expansion joint has been installed.  This expansion joint is suitable for installation indoors or outdoors and can withstand loading from pedestrian and light service equipment.  Not only is this expansion joint system suitable for installation in hospitals such as Herston Quarter but also shopping centres, commercial and public spaces.

The areas of the Herston Quarter wherein the Continuous Angle Leg Floor Joint was installed was in the tiled outdoor common areas and retail areas.

650m of the CPSX Carpark Expansion Joint was installed throughout the multistorey car park of the hospital.

CPSX Carpark Expansion Joint is a made of preformed cross-linked closed cell foam, specifically formulated to prevent water and debris from penetrating an expansion joint gap. Making the expansion joint gap completely waterproof.  A layer of rubber strand topping on the seal’s exposed surface protects the seal from being punctured by sharp objects and stiffens the seal increasing its point loading allowing pedestrians and traffic to safely traverse the expansion joint gap.

Our installation team did a fantastic job not only installing our expansion joint products but also ensuring their team members and other trades were kept safe during the installation at the peak of the Covid pandemic in Queensland, Australia.
