Heard Group Expansion Joint Systems were fortunate to be the expansion joint supplier and installer at the Herston Quarter – Surgical, Treatment and Rehabilitation Services (STAR) in Brisbane, Queensland on behalf of BesixWatpac.
Installed throughout the common indoor and outdoor areas of the hospital are the Heard Group Medium Duty Floor Expansion Joints together with our Continuous Angle Leg System with P5 grip rated cover plates.

Car Park Expansion Joint Water Seal and Medium Duty Floor Expansion Joints supplied & installed at Herston Hospital by Heard Group

The Heard Group Medium Duty Floor Expansion Joint has a 60mm movement range and is suitable for pedestrian traffic and retail service equipment. Accompanying the expansion joint bases are stainless steel sand blasted cover plates tested to AS4586-2013 giving a P5 grip rating.

Heard Group’s Expansion Joint Water Seal was installed beneath the Medium Duty Floor Expansion Joints providing a 100% waterproof barrier. The Heard Group Expansion Joint Water Seal is a preformed cross-linked closed cell foam, specifically formulated to prevent water and debris from penetrating an expansion joint gap.

Installed in the expansion joint gap beneath the expansion joint system, it forms a complete waterproof barrier, preventing water from leaking into other levels of the building or car parks below the concrete slab. The expansion joint water seal can also be installed above fire seals allowing both fire and water protection.

Heard Group’s Car Park Expansion Joint Water Seal was also supplied and installed throughout the multi-storey car park of the hospital.

The Heard Group Car Park Expansion Joint Water Seal is a preformed cross-linked closed cell foam, specifically formulated to prevent water and debris from penetrating an expansion joint gap.

A layer of rubber strand topping on the seal’s exposed surface not only protects the seal from being punctured by sharp objects, but also stiffens the surface of the seal increasing point loading, allowing pedestrians and trolleys to traverse safely over the expansion joint gap.

Designed by Hassell, the hospital is truly a world class health facility. The first stage of the $1.1 billion master planned Herston Health Precinct includes new surgical treatment and rehabilitation services, Spanish steps and a Skybridge linking STAR to the Royal Brisbane and Royal Women’s Hospitals. A big thank you needs to be given to the Heard Group Expansion Joint Installation Team who did a fantastic job not only installing our expansion joint, but also ensuring their team members and other trades were kept safe during the peak of the Covid pandemic in Queensland.
